Sustainability

Responsible and Committed Business

As a paper-based company, we've been committed to sustainable business practices for a long time, ever since Hallmark's first paper recycling programme began back in 1943, in fact we couldn’t do what we do without the continued health and vitality of our amazing forests. As such, we recognise our impact on the planet, and are committed to helping lead our industry in environmental excellence.

OUR Science Based Targets:

Sourcing

Hallmark’s sourcing and procurement standards are in line with our corporate beliefs and values.

We view our suppliers, licensees, and their subcontractors as an integral part of our business success and we strive to select only those who adopt the strongest ethical standards.

We expect all our suppliers, licensees, and their subcontractors to conduct their respective operations in a manner that respects the rights of the individuals they employ and to demonstrate careful stewardship of the environment.

Manufacturing

Hallmark Cards takes its ethical performance very seriously. In addition to our own code of conduct (which we ask all our suppliers to commit to) we, as a supplier, are also required to comply with codes of conduct for our customers and licensors.

We believe that the manufacture of our products should be consistent with the United Nations Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights and the International Labour Organisation Conventions.

100% of our roll wrap & over half of our cards are produced in the UK, lowering our carbon footprint & supporting UK businesses and employment.

We are in the process of removing all single use plastic from our products. So far, between 2019 and 2023 we have removed over 1000 tonnes of plastic from our supply chain.

100% of our electricity comes from renewable energy in our head office, factory and distribution centres. We are also working with our suppliers to transition to renewable energy by 2030.

Products

To ensure we reduce our impact on the climate we are extremely careful about the choices we make in relation to the materials we use. We are also committed to continuing our efforts to maximise the efficient usage of all materials, minimise any waste, and reduce our overall materials usage wherever possible.

And we’ve been making some progress…

We have developed a card-based solution to replace plastic badges and removed all glitter and sequins from our designs – replacing them with ‘paper-gems’ and fab faux effects!
Our extra-special cards are now even more wonderful with fully recyclable 3D paper engineering.
And in partnership with our suppliers, we’ve developed an innovative scrap-pad solution that means we've said goodbye to plastic foam pads!
