So, it’s Random Acts of Kindness Day, you like the concept, but you can’t think how to celebrate or mark the occasion… Well, worry not, that’s where we come in and we’ve come up with a few ideas that are a great way to spread a little happiness and sprinkle a little extra kindness around the world, whether it’s one act of kindness or a snowball effect of love.

What is the meaning of kindness? We all have our own ways of being kind, maybe it’s showing compassion and encouragement, not just to our close friends and family but to a total stranger too! Kindness is the act of showing care, the quality of being friendly to those around you, it’s about spreading your generosity and showing consideration to those who need it.

Here we go…

1: Send a Card: Surprise! We’re Hallmark, of course we think this is a good idea, but good mail really can help to make for a better day, and whether your card goes to your significant other, your best friend or you want to show kindness to your colleague, it’s an easy way to send someone a smile and let them know you’re thinking of them. At Hallmark, we love being kind and compassionate, and we encourage you to spread some meaningful moments in your life!

2: Pay it Forward: It’s another classic, but again it’s such a simple and sweet thing to do. How does it work? Next time you’re in a queue at a shop or supermarket and you see that the person behind you has just a few bits, let the cashier or sales assistant know you want to pay for their stuff too. When it works right and builds a little momentum you can end up with a whole chain of happiness and, even if you make just one person’s day, it will be worth it, right? So, maybe when you’re buying your morning cuppa, stick another one on the tab and treat the person behind you in the line as well, you’ll be amazed how good it feels.

3: Look for the Little Things: If you see someone struggling to get a pushchair over a kerb, if you know your elderly neighbour struggles to wrestle their bin out every week, if the person in front of you in the queue drops all their stuff, just take a minute to help them out. And when you’re in the office, or with a group of people, ask them how their day is, you never know if someone is feeling a little under the weather that day. They’ll appreciate it more than you know, and being compassionate makes everyone feel better.

4: Give Compliments: Make someone's day by sharing positivity in the form of a compliment, whether that’s simply telling them that they look great today or letting them know that they make a difference in your life. And maybe you’re feeling a little shy or the person you’re confident in complimenting is busy, why not pass someone a note and end it in a smiley face? The perfect part of giving someone a compliment is that you can do it virtually too! Give someone a text or start that teams meeting off with a smile.

5: Take Time to Talk: Never underestimate how much of a difference a quick chat could make to someone. There’s always time to say hi and show someone that you care when you put kindness first, and that could be the thing that gets them through the rest of the day. Maybe send a text to that one friend or family member you’ve been meaning to catch up with, or greet and thank your bus driver whilst you’re on the move. Taking that time to acknowledge someone can make their day feel a whole lot better.

Most importantly, be kind to yourself. Self-kindness takes bravery and courage, and in such a fast paced world sometimes we forget to be nice to ourselves. So, on this day, get the face masks out, have a bath filled with your favourite bath bombs, or simply… remember to breathe and say something nice about yourself.

These are just a few ideas, at the end of the day, just being you will brighten someone’s day!
