Joy of Christmas at The Piece Hall
Well, it’s been a busy few weeks for us here at Hallmark. All our usual seasonal activities have been getting underway and this year, for the first time ever, we’re also doing something a bit different. Since November 30th Hallmark has had a temporary residence in The Piece Hall, Halifax, where we’ve created a little corner of Christmas - Hallmark style!
We’ve got Hallmark movies on the big screen and a fantastic display of archive Christmas cards, from over 100 years of card creation, for our visitors to explore. Plus, a wealth of seasonal pop-up cards, festive tree decorations, wrapping paper and fun gift ideas to tempt our guests with! Our volunteer shop-floor elves have been having a fantastic time meeting people from across the globe and sharing their love for cards, Christmas and all things Hallmark, and we’ve even met a few people with card collections to rival our own!
There have been some wonderfully crafty workshops over the last few weeks too. Run by talented members of our team, and a few specially selected outside collaborators, these have been a great experience for all involved. Everyone who has attended has gone away feeling inspired, empowered and above all delightfully merry and merrily delighted with their finished products. (There are still a couple of workshops on the timetable for this week so, if you fancy joining us, click here to find out more).
It’s been a wonderful few weeks of creativity, connection and Christmas joy! We’re so glad that we decided to take a leap into the unknown and we’ve loved sharing our little slice of the season with the lovely folk of Halifax and beyond. In fact, the whole experience has been so inspiring it led to the creation of the lovely poem below…
~
There’s a history that’s weathered in these walls and colonnades
In this gently sloping courtyard filled with tents and barricades
There’s a sense of time colliding in the shadow of this spire
Helter skelter, archways and a faded concert flyer
It’s Christmas time and you can tell. They spelled it out in lights.
A forty-five foot spruce tree that looks magical at night
And everywhere you glance there’s something wonderful to see
As people mill about in little groups of twos or threes
Somewhere in the middle of this history and these walls
Our little Hallmark pop-up shop is setting out its stall
And we can call upon a wealth of history of our own
A shoebox turned into something that’s grown and grown and grown
Lovingly curated, captured set up and displayed
A place to show the world the craft that goes into our trade
A Christmas present wrapped up tight and tied off with a bow
A comforting and warm embrace from a friend you’ve always known.
